2023 Term 2 Book Recommendation

Kindy ~ Year 1

Book: A Monster Wrote Me a Letter 

Author: Nick Bland 


Written as a rhyming poem, this book depicts a heart-warming friendship between two unlikely characters, a young boy and a monster. After the monster mistakenly invites the frightened boy over to play the two become friends. 


This lovely, illustrated book sparks creativity within Kindy & year 1 students with its unique plot and effectively demonstrates how English words can be arranged in a fun and entertaining way through rhymes. 


Such a book demonstrates how quirky stories can be woven into exciting to read poems while allowing students to develop a greater understanding of poetry and narrative writing.

Year 2

Book: Discovery at Paradise Island 

Author: Sharon Boyce 


An exciting adventure book about a girl who learns that a holiday with Alexandria’s disable mum is more fun than she expected. 


This  story allows students to learn and appreciate those with disabilities helping them to develop empathy for those with special needs. The  sensitivity of this novel will assist students in understanding and reflecting on how to effectively write about sensitive matters in a  gentle yet positive way. 


This book not only aids students’ English abilities but also allows them to develop literacy and numeracy skills  but most importantly, social intelligence to help them behave in an empathetic manner when interacting with those with special needs.  Such a wonderful book demonstrates how students’ writing can be used to inform others on individuals’ uniqueness in positive ways.

Year 3

Harry Potter and The Philosophers Stone

Author: J.K. Rowling
